Twin Oaks Computing offers Free CoreDX DDS Licenses to IR&D and University Projects

The leading small-footprint CoreDX DDS is immediately accessible to research projects.

Twin Oaks Computing, the source for Practical Middleware Expertise, announces that the leading small-footprint publish subscribe Data Distribution Service (DDS) implementation, CoreDX DDS, is immediately available to Independent Research and Development (IR&D) and University projects for free.

“We hope that the research community can benefit from the application of CoreDX DDS to challenging new projects,” commented Clark Tucker, Twin Oaks Computing’s CEO. “This new licensing will provide access to a commercial-grade DDS implementation, addressing applications where home-grown or open-source alternatives are not suitable.”

Integrating a proven middleware component like CoreDX DDS can accelerate project development, allowing researchers to focus their efforts on the new aspects of the technology. The inclusion of CoreDX DDS in university and teaching projects will help to expand the base of engineers skilled in this advanced software technology.

About DDS

DDS is an Object Management Group (OMG) standard that defines an architecture, application programming interface (API) and wire protocol for type-safe network communication. DDS was designed specifically to meet the performance and Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of real-time and embedded systems. Use of DDS can reduce the software lifecycle cost and risk associated with systems that will be deployed and maintained over the course of many years.

  • DDS provides an Open Standard based communications architecture. By eliminating custom software and providing standard interfaces, DDS reduces development time and eases maintenance.
  • DDS decouples applications. By avoiding hardwired, stovepipe systems, individual subsystems can be added or upgraded without modifying other components.
  • DDS provides type-safe communication. Application data types are represented internally to provide critical type-safety.
  • DDS provides robust Quality of Service policies. With these policies, an engineer can adapt and adjust critical aspects of the communication middleware.
  • DDS applications are interoperable. The DDS API and wire-protocol ensure interoperability across operating systems, hardware architectures and programming languages.
  • DDS provides vendor independence. Applications are portable across compliant DDS implementations.

These aspects of DDS make it broadly applicable to many time-critical and mission-critical applications. It has been adopted by defense systems; aerospace systems; traffic management; industrial control; Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA); financial market data distribution; and automated trading.

About CoreDX DDS

Twin Oaks Computing has leveraged 30 years of experience developing and supporting large defense systems to develop CoreDX DDS, a high-quality, standards compliant, small-footprint DDS implementation.

CoreDX DDS provides the most feature rich small-footprint DDS implementation available. The full-featured CoreDX DDS library is measured in Kilobytes not Megabytes. CoreDX DDS has been deployed on a single CPU Intel Pentium system with just 640K RAM. This compact implementation is truly unique in the middleware industry.

CoreDX DDS provides wide platform support including Windows XP, Windows Vista, Linux, Solaris, VxWorks, and QNX on x86 32-bit and 64-bit, SPARC, and ARM processors. CoreDX DDS provides programming language support for C, C++, and Java (2009Q4).

Availability

These new no-cost CoreDX DDS licenses are available to 1) qualified IR&D projects performing proof-of-concept, demonstrations, or proposals on a pre-commercial, pre-award basis; or 2) qualified university and non-profit research or education projects. Other projects are encouraged to try the free 30-day evaluation of CoreDX DDS. The software is immediately available from Twin Oaks Computing’s Web site: here.
