CoreDX DDS Tips & Tricks

Welcome to this month's edition of CoreDX DDS Tips & Tricks, where our engineers provide quick bits of information to help our customers.

When do I need to re-generate type specific code from IDL?

It is a good practice to regenerate DDS type-specific code every time the application code is re-compiled. Many development organizations will put their IDL file(s) into version control along with the system source code. In this case, the code generated from IDL is treated like the binary code generated by the compiler.

If you are not already doing this in your environment, you may wonder when it is necessary to regenerate the type specific code. Generated type code must be re-generated any time the CoreDX DDS 'minor' version changes. [CoreDX DDS versions consist of "major.minor.patch" numbers.]

The CoreDX DDS library will report a run-time error if it detects the generated code was produced by a IDL type compiler version not compatible with the CoreDX DDSl library version that looks like this:

DP: ERROR :WARNING: version does not match CoreDX Library version.

DP: ERROR :This may cause software instability or crashes.

This error indicates the type specific generate code should be regenerated with the appropriate CoreDX DDS IDL compiler (coredx_ddl) version.

CoreDX DDS Tips & Tricks are intended to be useful for engineers using CoreDX DDS. If you have any questions, please contact us.
